Week 4: Kleinspiration
Creative #SmartTeachingTips Using Schlastic Magazines
By: Erin Klein
This week I chose to review the blog Kleinspiration created by Erin Klein. I read several of Erin's posts and it is clear that she has a passion for education and a love for her students. I will be focusing on one of her posts which discusses the benefits of using Scholastic magazines as a learning tool in the classroom. Erin shares her love for Scholastic and gave me great ideas for future lessons in my classroom someday. She includes this quote from Scholastic shown below.
Erin shares how Scholastic is more than just a magazine. These magazines follow current academic standards and also provide digital content with each issue. The digital content includes games and interesting resources that allow the students to engage in what they are learning.
I loved this blog post because Erin shares ways that she has used Scholastic magazines in her classroom. One way she incorporated Scholastic magazines into her classroom was a lesson about bats. The students did not have a lot of previous knowledge on bats. She had the students write lists of things they knew about bats. Then she had the students read the magazines to learn about bats. The students' misconceptions about bats being scary or harmful to other animals changed after reading the magazine. After the students had knowledge about bats they wanted to create a story about bats on the iPads. The Scholastic magazines enriched the lesson and engaged the students' learning.
Scholastic offers free 30 day subscriptions and free printables online! I believe Scholastic is a beneficial and fun resource to use in the classroom and I look forward to incorporating it into my classroom someday. Check out Scholastic for more information on how to use it in your classroom.
