Week 4: Cool Cat Teacher
10 WAYS TO FLIP A KID AND TURN THEIR DAY AROUND
By: Vicki Davis
This week I chose to review a blog titled Cool Cat Teacher. This blog is created by Vicki Jones who is an experienced teacher of 14 years. I browsed through several of Cool Cat Teachers posts, (which were all great) but I decided to focus on her blog post '10 Ways to Flip a Kid and Turn Their Day Around'. At the beginning of her blog post she shares a quote from Kevin Honeycutt "I believe you can flip a kid on any given day in one hour." Vicki pondered this quote and shares her sense of humor as she quotes herself 'how do you flip a kid, like you flip a house?'. She shares her own stories from her classroom experience and I thought it was very interesting to read her advice. Vicki shares a wonderful audio recording by Kevin Honeycutt where he shares a story of a young life turned around by great teachers. This article helped inspire her blog post and might give you inspiration too. You can listen to the recording here.
Vicki shares 10 different way to flip a kid and turn their day around. I loved all 10 of her ways but I will be focusing on a few different ways that stood out to me.
Number 6: Talk Privately with kids who act out: Vicki shares a story about a student who used profanity and had an awful outburst because her parents were getting a divorce. Instead of becoming upset and sending the student to the principal right away it is important to assess the situation and pull the student aside privately and ask what is going on. This can strengthen student-teacher relationships and help flip a students' day.
Number 8: Compliment them to their parents or someone important to them: This way stood out to me because I also believe genuine compliments can easily flip someone's day. Vicki shares how the first contact with the parent should always be something positive about the student. A kind note on a report card or a funny story about the students' personality can go a long way.
Number 10: Do Something Extra: Vicki shares how kids will notice when you go above and beyond. If you want to be a great teacher that your students will remember go above and beyond! Take interest in what they love, do things that they love, follow up, and laugh with them. These are a few simple ways to flip a students' day.
